BOATING on LAKE GASTON, VA/NC
This 20,300 acre reservoir
along the Roanoke River basin is 34 miles long and has
350 miles of shoreline.
The water feeds in from
the Kerr Lake Dam at Buggs Island, VA.

boat landings, click the "Marinas" link on left.
Power boats are permitted on the
lake, and aside from the plentiful number of jet skis, the most common
types of boats are pontoons, ski /wakeboard boats and bass or fishing
boats. The main lake is about a mile wide, and sail boats are a
delight to see on those sunny breezy days.
All of the many creeks of Lake
Gaston can be accessed by motorized boats
.
Yes, ALL! Several of the creeks, especially on the north shore of
the lake have bridges to boat under, but the culverts
really are wide & tall enough to clear the majority of boats if you lower the boat's bimini
top or ski rack. In fact, this bridge on the right crossing over
Lizard Creek provided a safe haven for my pontoon when a
thunderstorm quickly blew in!
Approaching the culverts at the
"no wake" or slow rate of speed is required and allows drivers going
under the bridge to line up the boat and assess the clearance height which can
fluctuate, usually within a foot.
If boating along shorelines,
around points of land, or toward the end of creeks and coves, be very careful
of shallow water, stumps or sandbars.
